Say “I Do” With More Than Words
Scripture Focus: Mark 10:9
“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Marriage begins long before the wedding day.
Before the dress, the venue, the rings, and the celebration, there should be a willingness to pause and ask God to guide the relationship you are preparing to build.
Begin with prayer.
Pray about your relationship. Pray about your future. Pray about the decisions you will make together. Pray for wisdom to recognize what strengthens your relationship and courage to address what needs to change.
Prayer should not be something we turn to only when marriage becomes difficult. It should become part of the foundation of the marriage itself.
Then come the vows.
Vows are powerful because they are promises. But they are not meant to remain beautiful words spoken during a ceremony. They are commitments that should become a way of living.
When you promise to love, honor, respect, support, and remain committed to one another, the question becomes: What will those promises look like in our everyday lives?
Commitment is demonstrated in how you communicate, how you handle disagreement, how you protect your relationship, and how you extend grace when life does not go according to plan.
This is also where boundaries matter.
A strong marriage requires couples to establish boundaries that protect their relationship, their privacy, their trust, and their unity. It means understanding that marriage creates a new family and being intentional about how outside relationships, opinions, responsibilities, and expectations will be handled.
You do not have to agree on everything to build a strong marriage.
But you do need to be willing to pray together, communicate honestly, establish healthy boundaries, and live out the commitments you make to one another.
Your vows are not just words for your wedding day. They are words you should be prepared to live.
Before you say “I do,” take time to ask:
What are we committing to?
What will our vows look like in everyday life?
What boundaries will protect what we are building?
And are we inviting God into the marriage we are preparing to create?
The wedding may mark the beginning of your life as husband and wife.
But the marriage is built through the choices you make together—one prayer, one commitment, and one day at a time.
Don't just prepare for the wedding. Prepare for the marriage.
